Established in 1981, me&him neighbours: Rockhall, are specialist computer hardware brokers with access to worldwide sources for the entire ranges from DEC Compaq HP and Cisco. A visual world populated by stock images of random beautiful people with those telephone headsets on but oddly never there if you visit… we stuck to our tried and tested approach of research and then binning everything that had gone before. And so Rockhall’s new mark was eventually born and looked like this:

With literature covers that look like this:

Even their delivery van livery…

But most importantly for a company that conducts almost all of it’s business online, their website. It enables customers to search a huge database of kit.

You can see the site here www.rockhall.co.uk

Not satisfied with the all of the above we soon realised that to provide Rockhall with a truely unique identity we were going to need to draw up their own typeface. Rockhall Regular. Part of which can be seen below.

Continuing our work with North Fulham NDC, me&him have created the second campaign aimed at helping residents of West Kensington London, to understand how they can save money whilst reducing the amount of energy they consume.

Both the initial (see earlier blog posting), and this secondary campaign have been aimed at people living on the North Fulham Clem Atlee estates and the current communications have used individual, focused logos to identify and clearly target each demographic.

The Green Grand idea challenges those residents to think up a great way to hep the environment, the winning idea will be given a budget of £1,000 to make it happen.

Our website for North Fulham NDC can be found here.

Here at me&him we have just completed the mark for The Oak Room. Project lead, Wendy Ferguson explains:

The project is to design, build and run an end of life care suite within the Evington Centre which is part of Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. The Evington Centre provides assessment and care for people with dementia and this project will meet the needs of patients who reach the end of their illness and die in our care and relatives who spend time with them. It is primarily funded by the Department of Health through the Kings Fund Enhancing the Healing Environment Programme. The ethos of the programme is that we design and build a facility that creates a sense of well being for those who use it, through good design, creative lighting, use of colour and art installation. The facility is to be called The Oak Room and will be defined by the logo and be a distinct and separate part of the ward area. The oak was chosen because it has a positive association with ageing and maturity. It also leaves behind a legacy for the future, as we do as people, and we also hope that the project will be an exemplar for other similar projects within the Trust.

We are always inundated with speculative approaches for jobs here at me&him. Most are horrendously bad. Most are from students having just graduated but given the current climate a lot are from people who have unfortunately been made redundant. Just yesterday I was asked for advice on how to go about getting things right. It’s not easy and there is no ‘right’ way to do it but here is a little list of things that might help.

Approach companies that you want to work for first. They might be the most famous ones but you should aim high, why not? However also look for companies that do work that you like or admire but maybe don’t have that famous name. There’s a lot of them out there. You found us after all.

Find out about the company you are contacting. You should research them, look through their website at least. We once had three students from Coventry apply for a job, no idea why as they were all graduates of automotive design course and last time I checked, we haven’t any car design. Don’t email the general contact address, find out who to contact. Often this info is there on the website. Our names are on our site yet most people still address their emails ‘to whom it may concern, or Dear me&him’. Oh and we aren’t already best pals, keep you emails polite and respectful. Don’t start with ‘Hi Guys, or Hi There, Wos Up Guys…’ yep those aren’t made up.

Say some nice things about our work, but nothing generic that could apply to anybody. Mention specific projects and not just the ones that may have won awards and say why you like them. Heap praise upon us. We all have egos.

Your CV will need to be online, in pdf format and in print. It must be well presented but nothing to crazy, let the work shine through, it doesn’t want to compete with your portfolio. Do not add anything unnecessary to it. We don’t care if you have a full, clean driving license. We don’t have a fleet of vans awaiting a designer come delivery person. We can safely assume that you like everybody else out there, ‘can work well on your own and as part of a team’ and when not working you love ‘going out to the cinema or equally ’staying at home reading’.

Oh and that pdf CV version please make sure it’s A4. We might just want to print it out and that 100×500mm page size you thought was ‘creative’ isn’t going to look good.

The next thing is unforgivable. Spelling mistakes. Get somebody else to check your email through, anything. Just don’t make any mistakes anywhere. It’s so incredibly important. There are a lot of people looking for jobs out there so don’t therefore, give us any reason to bin your CV.

One last thing, always say you will contact the recipient in a few days, never assume they will contact you because they probably won’t. We are pretty busy people you know (last week we worked every night until 3.30am).

Ultimately the only thing that will get you that job though is your work. It has to be brilliant.

If you would like to share your experiences on CV’s received or approaches made we would love to hear from you. Email us@meandhimdesign.co.uk

Most of Ian Sander’s clients knew him by name of course, readers of Ian’s books or blog knew him by name and those of us that follow Ian’s Twitterings again new him. So what of OHM London? Time for a rethink. Actually a reinvention to IanSandersCo and an amalgamation of everything Ian does under one umbrella site.

One of the great things about working with Ian Sanders is the almost instant feedback from his army of followers out there, so with the site only going live about a day ago we’ve already heard some good things:

I had a quick look at your site and it is beautiful. I love the retro style and it is also very unique. Great work!

I love the new website – very fresh and uncomplicated.

Great website …very cool.

Absolutely love the new site - I thought the old one was pretty good, but this is excellent.

You produce these nauseatingly jealousy-inspiring websites. Wow, it’s nice, again.
